To honour the 24th National Environment Day in the United Arab Emirates, JA Resorts & Hotels has renewed its commitment to sustainability in 2021, with more initiatives being added to a robust programme of successful environmental actions, including the introduction of a new fully sustainable amenities range across 9 hotels in the UAE and Indian Ocean.
Introducing New 100% Sustainable Amenities Range Across 9 Hotels & Resorts
JA Resorts & Hotels will roll out a new range of progressive and responsible accessories that have sustainability and integrity at their core, to be in place in all 9 hotels and resorts by Q4 of 2021. The ‘Think, Act, Live Responsible’ line embodies three crucial principles of responsible living: Re-think: reduced packaging, sustainable solutions, Re-use: multi-use products made of sustainable materials and Recycle: use of 100% recyclable natural materials. The tree-free packaging material of this natural collection is stone paper, an eco-friendly solution that is waterproof, 100% recyclable and features 100% soy ink print whereas products are made with bamboo fibre, bio-cotton and bio-based plastic from cornstarch. Products used will include bamboo combs, recycled files, razors, shower caps and sewing kits made of zero plastic natural materials, vanity sets with bio cotton and natural bamboo, bamboo toothbrushes, and laundry bags and slippers made from high quality felt and craft paper.
Maintain 5 Re-useable Water Bottling Plants to Eliminate Plastic Bottles
JA Resorts & Hotels have already replaced all plastic water bottles in the rooms and suites of 9 unique properties with environmentally friendly and reusable glass bottles instead. Throughout 2019 and 2020, an investment of more than 1 million AED was made to install 5 new water treatment systems, that kill 99.9% of bacteria, viruses, chemicals, and heavy metals along with cleaning and bottling systems at the various hotels and resorts, instantly making a huge reduction to the carbon footprint and environmental damage in terms of plastic – approximately 1.7 million pieces of plastic per annum in Dubai alone. The island resorts of JA Manafaru Maldives and JA Enchanted Resort Seychelles also have functioning bottling plants. JA Resorts & Hotels have also installed 40 digital water dispensers in public areas, serving fresh filtered water to customers free of charge, as well as JA team-members. All JA team-members were given their own steel re-useable water bottles, also available to guests. The bottling plants will be in full use throughout all properties in 2021, and the saving impact figures announced on World Water Day in March 2021.
Reduction of Waste Across 9 Hotels and Resorts
JA Resorts & Hotels has multiple initiatives and partners in the pursuit of waste reduction. The flagship resort, JA The Resort Dubai, works alongside Bee’ah, the Middle East’s fastest growing environmental management company. JA The Resort signed a new waste and recycling contract in 2020, to upscale all recycling practices and reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfill. By embedding recycling practices and conducting workshops and trainings to create a positive recycling culture, the increase in recycling practices has seen a new revenue stream through rebates and this money is reinvested to support more sustainable initiatives and events. JA Manafaru Maldives partnered with Adidas Parley to repurpose plastic found during reef cleanings. JA Hatta Fort Hotel repurposes vegetable food waste for feeding the resorts many animals, as well as making furniture from driftwood and collecting and re-using water from the five onsite ground wells. Across all hotels and resorts in the brand, all guest processes have moved from paper to digital, and actions such as making reservations, ordering, using the guest directory and making requests are now all online, resulting in a huge reduction of paper waste and printing. JA Resorts & Hotels has also made a commitment to become fully single use plastic free by the end of 2021.
Continue to support local initiatives Enable, Gver and More
JA Resorts & Hotels has several partners in social responsibility including Goumbook, a social enterprise that worked with JA The Resort Dubai to plant thousands of Ghaf trees around the resort grounds. The brand also works with Enable, an Emirati social enterprise that empowers People of Determination in preparing quality garden products and plants for use in hotels and businesses. JA The Resort also as a long-standing relationship with Al Noor Training Centre where young people with cognitive challenges are trained and hired to join the JA team, and Gver Recycling, whereby pre-loved furniture is donated to charity for repurposing.
Continue to Protect the Ocean via Beach and Reef Clean Ups
7 of the 9 unique properties within the JA Resorts & Hotels are located beside the ocean; JA Ocean View Hotel and JA Oasis Beach Tower, both located on The Walk, Jumeirah Beach Residence Dubai, JA Beach Hotel, JA Lake View Hotel and JA Palm Tree Court -all located on Jebel Ali Beach Dubai, JA Manafaru Maldives in the Haa Alifu Atoll, and JA Enchanted Island Resort in the protected St Anne Marine Park in the Seychelles. All 7 properties engage in regular beach clean-ups involving all team-members of the properties, while JA Manafaru Maldives also hosts dives with the local community to clean up the coral reef.
NB: To further highlight the achievements and goals of JA Resorts & Hotels, an environmental awareness event will be held at the brands flagship resort – JA The Resort – in the coming months, to celebrate the award-winning practices of the DTCM’s reigning official ‘Most Sustainable 5 Star Resort in Dubai’ and inaugurate the water bottling plant to industry professionals and the public.
